Duties and Responsibilities

An employee in this class is responsible for performing all functions and services of firefighting and emergency medical rescue. Emphasis of the work is on responding to and providing fire, rescue, and emergency medical services to citizens and businesses. Work involves extinguishing fires at fire scenes, safeguarding lives, salvaging property, preventing the recurrence of fires, and protecting properties from the elements, vandalism, and theft. Work also includes routine inspection and maintenance of fire apparatus, fire station facilities and equipment, performing fire inspections of businesses, providing basic life support, training and drilling in the use of fire equipment and firefighting techniques, and the performance of public relations activities.

The departments work on a 24hr on and 48hr off schedule.


Minimum Requirements

Education
Graduation from high school or GED equivalency, is required.

Experience
One (1) – three (3) years of public safety work is desired.

Special Requirements

  • North Carolina Class B driver’s license is required within 1 year of employment.
  • NC certification as Level II Firefighter is required. Will accept out-of-state certifications if NC reciprocity is obtained within 6 months. To learn more about the reciprocity process click here
  • NC certification as Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-Basic), is required. Will accept out-of-state certification if reciprocity is obtained within 6 months.
  • NC certification as Fire Inspector preferred.


Storm Duties

This position is classified as essential personnel and must maintain duty assignment in adverse conditions.


Benefits

The Town’s benefits package includes medical, dental, vision, life insurance, participation in the North Carolina Local Government Employees Retirement System, 401k match, paid holidays, vacation, and sick leave. Salary range: $51,240- $79,422. (as of 07/01/2023) It is the normal policy to start employees at the beginning of the salary range. The successful applicant is subject to a criminal background check and a pre-employment drug screening.


Physical Ability Test and Interview Process

After a posting has been closed, able candidates will be contacted with a date for the PAT testing and further information.  PAT and interviews are normally held on different days.
