Town of Nags Head
Map of Area Covered by NWS Morehead Regarding Weather

Low pressure is forecast to develop off of the Mid-Atlantic coast Monday and produce strong winds, large seas, dangerous shore break, rip currents and coastal flooding across eastern NC early this week.

These conditions are forecast to develop early Monday and persist into Wednesday though winds are expected to diminish late Tuesday.

This guidance is also forecasting widespread minor to locally moderate soundside flooding adjacent to the Albemarle and Pamlico Sounds. The next full briefing is planned for Monday morning though one could be issued early this evening if there are any major changes to the forecast.

Read the entire briefing from our local National Weather Service office.

Truck driving on beach.

The opening of beach driving season has been delayed a few days due to high surf and strong winds, which are making the beach unsafe for driving. You can receive notifications when we update our beach driving information but visiting our web site. Look for Beach Driving updates under the New Flash category.

Although the beach is not yet open to driving, you can purchase a permit now. The seasonal beach driving permit fee has increased from $25 for everyone to $50 for Nags Head residents and property owners and $100 for all others. This is the first permit fee increase since 1978.

**Nags Head residents and property owners must obtain their $50 permit at Nags Head's town hall. The $100 permits will be available for purchase from Nags Head's town hall, online at Nags Head's web site, and at various tackle shops in the town.

In addition, Nags Head and the Town of Kill Devil Hills will no longer have a beach driving permit reciprocity agreement. Therefore, a Nags Head permit will allow you to only drive on the beach in Nags Head. A Kill Devil Hills beach driving permit will no longer allow you to drive on Nags Head's beach.

Substantial growth in Nags Head's beach population and the increased popularity of the area during the shoulder season has created more conflicts between beach drivers and those on the beach on foot. We must more closely monitor conditions and have started closing the beach in certain sections based on population.

Beach width has also been an issue in the northern end of town, requiring staff to open and close certain beach sections to driving several times during the beach driving season (Oct 1 – April 30). The increase in permit fees will help us cover the additional time and expense managing the beach driving program.

Brochure for National Night Out 10.4.2022 5-7 pm at Dowdy Park at 3005 S Croatan Hwy.
Nags Head's Police Department is holding their National Night Out event on Tuesday, October 4 from 5 - 7 pm at Dowdy Park at 3005 South Croatan Highway.

This is our opportunity each year to promote police-community partnerships and engage with the public. National Night Out helps to bring back a sense of community and provides a great opportunity to bring law enforcement and neighbors together under positive circumstances. We will have a bounce house, a dunking booth, a seatbelt simulator and other various vendors and kids activities. The police department will also be providing food for the event.

On top of all of the fun things we'll have, a helicopter from US Coast Guard Elizabeth City will fly over. Don't miss it!

One page brochure advertising Veterans Day ceremony at NH Town Hall on 11/11/22 at 11 am.

You won't have to be in town this year to see our popular Veterans Day ceremony. We'll be livestreaming the event on our YouTube channel starting at 11 am. The ceremony is usually anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes long.

If you can join us in-person, we'll have a special speaker and live music. We'll also lay a beautiful wreath at our veterans memorial. We hope you can take a few minutes out of your day to honor the sacrifices, courage, and patriotism of the men and women who have worn a military uniform.

Photo pizza in a box with text that says no pizza boxes in recycling.

Did you know that a single pizza box can contaminate an entire curbside bin of recyclables?

Grease and oils bind to the cardboard preventing it from being recycled. To help keep contaminated items from being mixed with correct items, please place your pizza boxes in your waste bin or compost.

Thanks for recycling right, Nags Head!

If you don't have time to haul your recyclables to the recycling centers we have at town hall (5401 South Croatan Highway) and our public services facility (2200 Lark Avenue), subscribe to the curbside recycling collection service offered by TFC Recycling. The cost is only $9.60/month thanks to a $5/month subsidy from the Town.
