It’s World Radio Day! When the power goes out and cell towers get congested, one technology remains the ultimate lifeline, the radio. While your phone is stuck searching for signal, a battery-powered or hand-crank weather radio could already be delivering real-time updates. Stay connected by making a radio a permanent part of your emergency kit! More emergency preparation information can be found on the ReadyNC.gov website.

Regular septic system inspections and pumping are essential and could save you thousands in repairs. Your septic system should be inspected every three years by a licensed professional and pumped every three to five years, depending on household size and usage. Staying on top of maintenance prevents solids from building up, clogging your system, and leading to costly failures. If you’re a Nags Head property owner, you’re in luck! Through our Todd D. Krafft Septic Health Initiative, we provide: - Free non-emergency inspections for conventional systems sized under 3,000 gallons/day.
- Financial assistance for pump-outs, repairs, or replacements.
- A $250 water account credit when you have your septic tank pumped, if pumping is needed.
- Low-interest loans to help cover repair costs.
Take advantage of these resources to protect your system, your property, and your wallet.

Do a little spring cleaning and safely clear out old paperwork at the Town of Nags Head's Community Shred Event on Saturday, May 16, 2026 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Nags Head's Town Hall, 5401 South Croatan Highway. Bring your outdated personal documents and watch them be securely destroyed on-site. It’s the perfect chance to tidy up those file drawers, reduce clutter, and protect yourself from identity theft while you’re at it. The Outer Banks Woman’s Club will also be on-site collecting non-perishable food items for the Food Bank. Donations are appreciated and will help support neighbors in need. Items accepted for shredding include tax documents, bank statements, canceled checks, travel documents, paycheck stubs, ATM and credit card receipts and statements, insurance documents, and utility bills. This free event is open to everyone.

According to Recycle Across America, Americans throw away 2.5 million plastic bottles every hour! That is a lot of plastic. Recycling one ton of plastic bottles saves the equivalent energy usage of a two person household for a whole year. If you have extra recycling needs, feel free to use the recycling containers at Nags Head's town hall, which are available 24/7/365. We also have containers at our Public Services facility at 2203 Lark Avenue in the north end of town. They are available Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, 9 am - 3:30 pm. Curbside recycling makes it easy for Nags Head property owners to reduce landfill waste and protect the local coastal environment, without extra trips to the recycling centers. Be sure to subscribe to the curbside recycling collection service offered by TFC Recycling. The cost is $13.35/month. View a reference guide on what can and cannot go into our recycling containers. Thanks for recycling!
