Construction Progress Update - South Nags Head

Work has resumed on the stormwater infrastructure improvement project spanning from James Street to just south of Juncos Street in south Nags Head. Remaining activities will focus primarily around the Juncos Street beach access and include:

•    Replacement of the pedestrian dune walkover

•    Installation of a concrete pumping station

•    Installation of a dune infiltration gallery

•    Replacement of the beach access parking area

Please note: pedestrian access will be restricted once the dune walkover is removed and will remain limited until the new walkover is installed. Vehicular access will be maintained as much as possible throughout construction to allow travel through to the beach.

Beach Nourishment Update

Beach Nourishment Update

On November 13, we received bids from three dredging companies for our next beach nourishment project, which will place sand on the beach from 2919 South Virginia Dare Trail south to the town line adjacent to Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

Staff will present the bid results to Nags Head's Board of Commissioners at its December 3 meeting. A follow-up mid-month meeting is scheduled for December 17, during which the Board will review the Fall 2025 beach survey results, receive a detailed analysis of the bid tabulation, and consider financing models for the project.

The Board is scheduled to formally consider the bids at its January 7, 2026 meeting.

While receiving bids marks a major milestone, additional analysis and decision-making remain before we can confirm the project’s construction timeframe. As with past nourishment efforts, work will likely occur sometime between April and late summer in either 2026 or 2027.

All three meetings—December 3, December 17, and January 7—will be livestreamed and available for later viewing at YouTube.com/TownofNagsHead. We encourage property owners to watch these meetings to stay informed as the project progresses.

Agendas are posted prior to each Board of Commissioners meeting.

As you’re prepping your holiday meal, remember to wear tight-fitting sleeves or keep them rolled up while cooking. Loose clothing can easily brush against a burner or hot surface. This simple habit can help prevent a fire during the busiest cooking day of the year.

As you prepare for your family feast, here are a few tips to keep your dinner as eco-friendly as possible: Remember to recycle your cleaned glass, aluminum and paper products. If there is food waste, be sure to use your regular trash bin. Use re-usable containers for left overs.

Peas, corn, beans, tomatoes - many of these foods come in aluminum cans!

If you have items on your Thanksgiving shopping list that come in an aluminum can, don't forget to rinse them out and recycle them. Aluminum is perpetually recyclable, so it's best not to throw them away in your waste bin.

Thank you for recycling right!

View a reference guide on what can and cannot go into our recycling containers.

If you don't have time to haul your recyclables to the recycling centers we have at Town Hall (5401 South Croatan Highway) and our Public Services facility (2203 Lark Avenue), be sure to subscribe to the curbside recycling collection service offered by TFC Recycling. The cost is $13.35/month.
