National Hurricane Center Hurricane Erin Update, August 15, 2025, 2 pm
Distant hurricanes can be deadly to swimmers in the ocean.

Erin is now a hurricane with top winds of 75 MPH.

It's still too early to know the exact track as Erin passes near the Outer Banks, but regardless of track:

  • We WILL see dangerous rip currents the majority of next week. (This weekend is ok)
  • We do expect large, dangerous and life threatening waves, peaking Tuesday and Wednesday. Extensive beach erosion is likely.
  • Coastal flooding is likely, especially around high tide beginning Monday, peaking Tuesday and Wednesday, and diminishing Thursday. Portions of Highway 12 on the Outer Banks may be impassable at times.

Monitor the latest briefings from the National Hurricane Center and our local National Weather Service Office.

Also, be sure to sign up to receive emergency alerts from OBX Alerts AND ensure that wireless emergency alerts (WEA) are enabled on your mobile phone.
