Elevated Marine Conditions Expected Friday into Next Week, August 1, 2025

According to the National Weather Service office in Morehead City, not only will an incoming cold front bring rain and cooler temperatures to our area this weekend into early next week, but it will also bring elevated marine conditions to our waters. The current forecast has 15-25 kt northeasterly winds with 30 kt gusts across our inland sounds and coastal waters, as well as 5-8 ft seas across our coastal waters starting Friday evening.

These conditions will likely result in red beach warning flags (high hazard conditions, swimmers discouraged from entering the water) flying on the beach and possibly double red flags (water closed to the public) being raised.

If single red flags are flying, we'll post that information to our Facebook and Instagram sites.

If double red flags are flying, we'll post on our social media sites and to our website. If you have signed up for alerts either from our website or from OBX Alerts, you will receive a double red flags notice through those means, too.

You can also check out the daily beach conditions on the Love the Beach, Respect the Ocean website.

Our Ocean Rescue competition team earned second place, in the Big Beach Division, at the United States Lifesaving Association’s South Atlantic Regional Lifeguard Championships, held July 16–17 at Jennette’s Pier.

We're proud of their hard work, skill, and dedication, not just during the competition, but every day on our beaches. Thank you for representing Nags Head so well.

Nags Head Town Planner Chris Trembly explaining how to reduce light pollution to 2 kids at Dowdy Park.

We're continuing our efforts to protect both our skies and waters with two of our employees bringing hands-on education to the community every Thursday through August 21 at the Dowdy Park Farmer's Market from 9 am to 1 pm.

Town Planner Chris Trembly is showcasing our Dark Skies, Bright Starts Initiative with a unique, interactive diorama. Set inside a darkened tent, the display highlights how something as simple as shielding an outdoor light can dramatically reduce light pollution. The goal? To preserve the beauty of the night sky for stargazers, wildlife, and future generations.

Also available is Environmental Planner Conner Twiddy, who leads the Todd D. Krafft Septic Health Initiative. Nags Head property owners can learn about free inspections, financial assistance for septic system repair or replacement, and a $250 water account credit for having their tanks pumped.

Whether you're curious about better outdoor lighting or managing your septic system, Chris and Conner will be at every market through August 21 to help. Stop by and see how small changes can make a big difference for Nags Head!

What should you do with that stack of magazines on your coffee table? Put them in your curbside recycling bin! A common recycling misconception is that magazines can not be recycled due to their glossy pages, but this type of glossed paper is recyclable in our facility. We are happy to help you declutter while saving trees in the process.
