National Weather Service Hurricane Preparedness Forums

Hurricane Preparedness Forum – Hosted by the National Weather Service

The National Weather Service invites you to a free, public forum on hurricane preparedness, open to all!

This informative session will feature a presentation from an NWS meteorologist covering:

  • Why you should never focus solely on a storm’s category
  • What the hurricane path or track really means
  • The wide range of impacts tropical cyclones can bring
  • Why you should never let your guard down, even after the storm has passed

The forum will also include the hurricane outlook for this year, with a reminder that it only takes one storm to make a lasting impact.

There will be time for questions and answers at the end of the presentation.

We encourage everyone to attend and stay informed — your safety starts with preparation!

Caution Advised Near Milepost 17 During Utility Work

Beginning Monday, July 14, utility work will take place in the 8700 block of South Old Oregon Inlet Road (near Milepost 17) as part of an ongoing stormwater improvement project.

Crews will bore beneath the road to install a utility pipe for the upgraded drainage system. During this time:

  • The concrete multi-use path will be closed.
  • A pipe ramp will be installed across the roadway.
  • Advance warning signs will alert drivers of temporary traffic changes.

Please use caution when traveling through the area. Weather permitting, work will be completed in one to two days.

Read more about the project (known as Area 13).

Grilling Safety Tips

Grill Safety Tip: Set up your grill in a clear, open space—away from overhanging branches, deck railings, and high-traffic areas. Keep a 3-foot kid- and pet-free zone, use long-handled tools to prevent burns, and make sure an adult is always supervising.

Grilling too close to anything that can burn is a serious fire hazard. Find more Grill Safety Tips at nfpa.org/grilling.

Service and Heroism: The Nags Head Ocean Rescue Story Premiers July 15 at 7 pm

Less than 20 seats left!

Be sure to register NOW if you plan to attend the premier of our new short film, Service and Heroism: The Nags Head Ocean Rescue Story, this Tuesday, July 15, 2025 at 7 p.m. at Jennette's Pier.

The film provides an authentic, behind-the-scenes glimpse into the world of beach lifeguards: their rigorous training, strong camaraderie, and the high-stakes situations they regularly confront. You’ll hear firsthand from the guards who’ve performed rescues, as well as from those whose lives were saved by them.

After the screening, stick around for a panel and Q&A with local and regional ocean rescue leaders, as well as some of the voices featured in the film.

Admission is free, but space is limited so please register in advance.
