Budget Public Hearing June 11 at 9 am

At the May 7, 2025 meeting, Town Manager Andy Garman presented his Recommended Budget for Fiscal Year 2025-2026 to the Board of Commissioners. 

We encourage our community to review the proposed budget and share input at the June 11 public hearing at 9 a.m. in the Board of Commissioners Room at 5401 South Croatan Highway.

Highlights include:

Note that the June 4 Board of Commissioners meeting has been rescheduled to June 11.



Construction Update

Construction is in progress to replace waterlines and improve drainage along the South Memorial Avenue corridor. Below is a brief description of the work.

  • Watermain replacements are scheduled along South Memorial Avenue between Ario Street and Atlas Street. Additional replacements are scheduled along Ario Street, along the length of Albatross Street and along Atlas Street.
  • Cross street storm pipes are scheduled to be replaced at the following intersections along South Memorial Avenue: Albatross Street, Atlas Street, Driftwood Street, Gallery Row, Abalone Street, Bonnett Street and Bittern Street. Additional drainage extensions are proposed to the existing drainage network at Gallery Row through to South Wrightsville Avenue, Albatross Street, Bonnett Street and Bittern Street.
  • In the Fall 2025 street resurfacing is proposed along the South Memorial Avenue corridor from Bittern Street to Eighth Street, Ario Street, Albatross Street including the beach access, Atlas Street, Driftwood Drive, Gallery Row, Abalone Street, and Gannett Avenue.

June 6, 2025 Update

  • Bittern Street and South Memorial Avenue - A cross street storm pipe is being replaced on the south side of the intersection. This should be completed June 6, weather permitting. 
  • Bittern Street and South Memorial Avenue - A cross street storm pipe will be replaced Monday, June 9,  on the north side of the intersection. 
  • South Memorial Avenue and Atlas Street intersection - A cross street pipe will be replaced mid week next week.
  • Waterline work is currently taking place in the 2600 block of South Memorial Avenue. This work is expected to be completed by mid week next week. Once completed, the waterline work will move over to Ario Street to begin the water main replacement. Weather permitting, this work should only take a week to complete. Then, work will move to Atlas Street and then Albatross Street.

Dune Cost Share Program

The Ocean Sand Relocation Permit Application period may have ended, but there is still money available through the Dune Management Cost Share Program. We will be taking applications for dune grants through June 16, 2025.

For those that may not be aware, the Town offers a cost-share program of up to $1,000/lot to assist oceanfront property owners that would like to plant approved, native dune vegetation, on their properties, or install sand fencing for dune stabilization.

Grantees are also eligible for reimbursement of up to $3,500/individual lot, every three years, for sand relocation activities and required dune vegetation and/or sand fence. Note that you must be issued a sand relocation authorization letter by the town to be eligible for reimbursement.

If you are/were approved for a dune grant, please be aware that you must submit the necessary paperwork by June 23, 2025, to receive a reimbursement check for this season.

Lifeguard Stands in Nags Head - Update of Availability

From now until June 20, we have lifeguards at the following beach accesses: 

  • Abalone
  • Bonnett 
  • Hollowell
  • Enterprise 
  • Epstein 
  • Forrest 
  • Gulfstream 
  • Hargrove 
  • Indigo
  • Juncos

From June 20 to August 15, we'll add stands at the following accesses: Albatross, Town Hall, Gray Eagle, Ida, and Limulus.

After August 15, lifeguard stand locations will depend on the availability of staffing. We will update our website with the latest information.

Service and Heroism: The Nags Head Ocean Rescue Story Premiers July 15 at 7 pm

On July 15, 2025 at 7 p.m., the Town of Nags Head will premier it's new short film, Service and Heroism: The Nags Head Ocean Rescue Story, showcasing the dedication and bravery of Nags Head's Ocean Rescue team. Created through a collaboration with CurrentTV, this powerful piece will offer an inside look at the squad's intense training, daily responsibilities, and steadfast commitment to protecting beachgoers. Through personal interviews and striking stories, the documentary will honor the professionalism and heroism of these first responders. 

A panel discussion and question and answer session will be held following the screening. Regional and local ocean-rescue leaders, along with several of the film’s interviewees, will be on hand.

No poolside items in recycling please.

Sandals, pool floats, sunglasses... we've seen it all!

Many of these items are made of plastic, but they are not recyclable. Please do not place poolside items in the recycling bins. Thank you for recycling right this summer.

If you don't have time to haul your recyclables to the recycling centers we have at Town Hall (5401 South Croatan Highway) and our Public Services facility (2203 Lark Avenue), be sure to subscribe to the curbside recycling collection service offered by TFC Recycling. The cost is only $13.35/month.
