The roadwork taking place this week on the northbound side of South Croatan Highway between Soundside Road and Hollowell Street has been completed and we are happy to report that the highway has been reopened fully. We were expecting to find an asbestos-cement pipe that would have to be cut and filled with concrete so it wouldn’t collapse further. Instead, we discovered a ductile iron pipe, which did not need to be stabilized, significantly shortening the project timeline.

The North Carolina General Assembly has recently received several legislative proposals that erode the authority of local governments to regulate development. These bills are in direct opposition to what we believe is vitally important in maintaining the vision and success of our community. Although we have seen significant growth and change in the last few decades, Nags Head strongly believes that the town’s success is tied to the vision established for this community many years ago. “We uphold our legacy by protecting and promoting our small-town character that includes a sustainable local economy based on family vacation tourism, a high-quality beach experience, and small, locally owned businesses. Fundamental to our legacy and quality of life are preserving the historic architecture and culture that distinguishes our town; providing residents and visitors with excellent public services and well-maintained recreational amenities; and ensuring access to a well protected natural coastal environment.” Some of the bills we are concerned with are: ~ H765/ H369: Would require the allowance of four units per acre anywhere residential zoning is allowed, including special environmental districts such as Nags Head Woods. Additionally, these proposals would remove our ability to establish minimum parking requirements which could cause havoc due to the nature of our town being a drive-to destination. - S495/H627: Would require Nags Head to allow an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) on every single-family lot, without regard for the capacity or character of individual neighborhoods.
- S497: Mandates the allowance of middle housing types — including duplexes, triplexes, and quadplexes — in all residential zoning districts.
- S493: Removes extraterritorial jurisdiction (ETJ) authority. Nags Head currently uses its ETJ authority to regulate certain nuisance activities in the Ocean and Sound.
Please consider contacting our local legislators to ask for their continued support in opposing these legislative efforts. State Senator, State Senate District 1 - Bobby Hanig 300 N.
