Retire your smoke alarms after 10 years.

Smoke alarms are a key part of a home fire escape plan. Working smoke alarms give you an early warning. Use daylight saving this weekend as an opportunity to check the date of your smoke alarms. For more safety tips: nfpa.org/smokealarms

Cape Hatteras National Seashore Photo of Baseline Trail Marker

Did you know there is a nice, easy trail right at Whalebone Junction?

Next time you stop to use the restrooms at the National Park Service's Information Center on NC 12, consider stretching your legs on the easy, flat, 3/4-mile round trip hike that explores the maritime forest and leads to an old baseline survey marker from the 1800s that was vital in producing some of the first accurate maps of the east coast.
