Water System Flushing Underway

We have begun flushing our water system to remove sediment and other deposits that can build up over time. If not removed, these materials may cause water quality deterioration, taste and odor problems, or discoloration of the water. Water may also stagnate in lesser used parts of the distribution system. This can result in degraded water quality.

What to Expect

Work typically takes place between 8:30 am and 4:00 pm.

When we are flushing the water lines in your area, you may observe any or all of the following conditions:

  • low water pressure
  • no water pressure
  • discolored water

In addition, you should raise the lever on automatic ice makers and to check the water quality prior to washing clothes or running automatic dishwashers.

The schedule may change due to emergencies and other workload priorities.

If you have any questions, please call our Public Services Department at 252-441-1122.

Visit the front page of our web site to see where we'll be flushing each week. Or, sign up to receive emails or texts when we send out the updated schedule. You'll find Water System Flushing Schedule under the News Flash category at the link below.

Nags Head Awarded $4.5 Million in Grants

We've been awarded $4.5 million in grants from the North Carolina Land and Water Fund for vital conservation and shoreline restoration projects!

Here’s the breakdown of the grants:

  • $4 Million for Conservation Easements: This will protect over 250 acres of mature maritime forest in Nags Head Woods. These conservation easements ensure this unique ecosystem, one of NC's last intact maritime forests, remains preserved for future generations. The land, managed by The Nature Conservancy, will stay safe from development, securing essential habitats and natural beauty.
  • $500,000 for Shoreline Restoration: This funding will restore 550 feet of public shoreline along Roanoke Sound using a "living shoreline" approach to combat erosion and enhance natural resilience. This project at the Harvey soundside access and Soundside Event Site will bring back brackish marsh habitats, supporting fish, birds, and other wildlife while reinforcing our shoreline’s durability.

We’re grateful for the support and partnership from The Nature Conservancy and the Dare County Tourism Board in making these projects possible.

Collage of photos from the Town's Veterans Day ceremony in 2024.

Above are a few powerful moments captured from our Veterans Day ceremony on Monday. We were honored to welcome Lieutenant General Anthony R. Hale, Deputy Chief of Staff for Intelligence at the Department of the Army, as our distinguished guest speaker.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed to making this ceremony meaningful and respectful, honoring the service and sacrifices of our nation's veterans.

Thank you to the veterans who joined us—your presence is a powerful reminder of the dedication and sacrifice that safeguard our freedom.

We hold a poignant ceremony at 11 am on Memorial Day each year, so be sure not to miss that.
