In partnership with Outer Banks Health, Dare County, and other local law enforcement agencies, Nags Head's Police Department is bringing the Blue Envelope Program to our community. This program provides law enforcement with a communication awareness tool for interacting with community members who have conditions like autism spectrum disorder, dementia, and anxiety. Stop by the police department on the first floor of our town hall, to pick up an envelope.

A reminder: we've implemented a new beach warning flag system this summer. Lifeguard supervisors are working in conjunction with Dare County Emergency Management’s Love the Beach, Respect the Ocean project and the National Weather Service's rip current forecasting group to determine the level of risk each day, starting Memorial Day weekend through October 15, when flags will be posted on flag poles at our public beach accesses. Flag Definitions Yellow – Medium hazard. Moderate surf and/or currents are present. Weak swimmers are discouraged from entering the water. For others, enhanced care and caution should be exercised. Red – High hazard. Rough conditions such as strong surf and/or currents are present. All swimmers are discouraged from entering the water. Those entering the water should take great care. Double Red – Water is closed to public use. Swimming in the Atlantic Ocean shall be unlawful. The term "swimming" is defined to mean and include any entry into the water of the Atlantic Ocean whether assisted by a raft, float, or other aid or device commonly used, but shall not include any entry assisted by a "surfboard" or "body board and fins. Also, visit the Love the Beach Respect the Ocean website for beach and ocean safety information. Don't forget to text OBXBEACHCONDITIONS to 77295 for daily beach-related weather and ocean condition alerts.

We're excited to announce that the NC Department of Environmental Quality’s Division of Coastal Management recently awarded the Town a $500,000 grant for two living shoreline projects in the Roanoke Sound. These projects will provide site analysis and preliminary engineering and design of two community-prioritized estuarine marsh restoration and shoreline stabilization sites at Nags Head Woods Preserve, off Villa Dunes Drive, and West Soundside Road. These sites were selected through a comprehensive public input process and will include the restoration of brackish marsh, submerged aquatic vegetation habitat, and provide for resilient shoreline stabilization. This important coastal habitat serves as a wildlife nursery while also providing important flood mitigation and water quality services.

Way to go Nags Head Ocean Rescue! They recently took first place in the Small Beach Division in the South Atlantic Lifesaving Association's regional competition in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. If you've been on the beach in northern Nags Head early on a summer morning, you know just how hard these folks train to keep us safe. We're extremely proud of our team of ocean rescue heroes. In the group photo are: back row: Will Garman, Patrick Trask, Mason Lenz, Shawn Kenny, Coleman Flynn, Patrick O’Keefe, Chad Motz, Fred Gagnon, Jacob Ramey, Ethan White, and Atoine Cowan. front row: Sophie Benkusky, Kendal Castle, Dounia Hage, Megan Buchanan, Sarah Knie, Zoe Kenny, Jenn Dollinger, Jessica Ball, Catherine Duqette, Viviane Duqette, Laurence Chartrand, and Victoria Passmore. Don't forget to stop by and ask them about the day's conditions before heading in to the ocean.

"Should I even bother to recycle?" We hear this question from time to time, and of course we reply with YES!! Here are some stats on how much TFC Recycling recycled so far in 2024: From January - June 2024, TFC processed: - 38 million plastic bottles
- 25 million aluminum cans
- 33 million lbs of cardboard
Without curbside recycling, all of these materials would end up in a landfill. Please continue recycling your materials for a greener future. Your efforts are making a difference. For a quick recycling reference, click here: https://tfcrecycling.com/what-can-be-recycled/ Thank you for recycling right! If you don't have time to haul your recyclables to the recycling centers we have at town hall (5401 South Croatan Highway) and our public services facility (2200 Lark Avenue), subscribe to the curbside recycling collection service offered by TFC Recycling. The cost is only $13.35/month.
