If you aren't familiar with septic systems as opposed to sewer systems, take a moment to learn more about these underground wonders that keep our wastewater woes at bay by watching Dare County's short video. Remember, a well-maintained septic system is a happy septic system! So, be sure to check out our Todd D. Krafft Septic Health Initiative, which offers, to Nags Head property owners, free services AND financial assistance for those having their septic systems pumped, repaired, or replaced. Expect to encounter lane closures and traffic issues on South Croatan Highway between Eighth Street and Hollowell Street. While spring typically brings fewer thunderstorms, it's crucial to stay prepared for unexpected weather changes. Follow these simple tips to create your lightning safety plan. - Check the forecast and postpone outdoor plans if needed. We trust forecasts from our local National Weather Service office in Morehead City/Newport.
- Watch for darkening skies, flashes, and stronger winds.
- Know where to shelter if storms hit. Find a sturdy house, building, or car with a hard-top roof. Don't retreat to dugouts, sheds, pavilions, picnic shelters, or other small structures.
- Don't go under or near tall trees, swim, or be near, water, or be near metal objects or windows.
- Hear thunder? Get to safety immediately!
- Stay indoors for at least 30 minutes AFTER you last hear thunder.
- Don't use or touch electronics, outlets, or corded phones.
It's simple: when thunder roars, head indoors!

As you work in your yard this spring, remember: grass clippings, weeds, leaves, sticks, branches...none of these go in the recycling bin. Instead, you can place them by the road in front of your home through April 30, 2024. We will remove yard debris as part of our curbside brush/bulk disposal service. Note that this service will end for the season April 30. And, on another note, our brush/bulk collection yard will be closed until late April due to construction of a new and improved collection yard! Thank you for recycling right! If you don't have time to haul your recyclables to the recycling centers we have at town hall (5401 South Croatan Highway) and our public services facility (2200 Lark Avenue), subscribe to the curbside recycling collection service offered by TFC Recycling. The cost is only $10.33/month thanks to a $5/month subsidy from the Town.
