South Croatan Highway Paving Taking Place

A North Carolina Department of Transportation contractor is resuming the South Croatan Highway paving project in Nags Head. Please keep this in mind when traveling the highway and be sure to slow down to ensure everyone's safety.

The Fred Smith Company plans to return to work Monday/Tuesday, February 19/20, 2024, milling and resurfacing US-158/South Croatan Highway between Eighth Street and Hollowell Street in the northern section of town.

Expect to see lane closures during the next 2 -3 weeks while this work is being completed. The traffic signal contractor will follow behind the paving to ensure all signal work is completed.

Motorists must exercise caution when traveling in the active construction area. We appreciate your patience and cooperation while construction is ongoing.

Additional updates will be provided as construction progresses.

The project schedule is subject to change due to inclement weather or extenuating circumstances that can result in construction delays.

Night to Shine 2024

Nags Head Police Department members again participated in this year's Night to Shine. An annual event organized by the Tim Tebow Foundation, the Night to Shine is typically held around Valentine's Day. This special event is designed to provide a prom night experience for individuals with special needs, aged 14 and older.

During Night to Shine, participants are treated to a red-carpet entrance, complete with welcoming cheers and paparazzi. The event includes various elements of a traditional prom, such as dancing, music, and refreshments. Each guest is paired with a "buddy" to ensure they have a memorable and enjoyable experience.

One of the core goals of Night to Shine is to celebrate the worth and value of every individual, including those with special needs, and to create a night where they can feel loved and appreciated.

American Beachgrass Planting Underway

Work has started  on our American beachgrass planting project, which is taking place along the beach from the Bonnett Street public access south to the town's terminus near Mile Post 21. We will be planting about 1.3 million sprigs along the oceanfront, which will provide additional stability to the dunes that were constructed many years ago.

American beachgrass (Ammophila breviligulata) is a native, cool-season grass also known as dune grass that grows most prolifically in the zone of accretion in the foredune area, and the eastern most locations  of the back dune area.

Several characteristics make American beachgrass suitable for dune building and stabilization in North Carolina:

  • Quick establishment and effective trapping of sand the first growing season.
  • Ease of harvest, storage, and transplanting, with an excellent survival rate.
  • Commercial availability from nurseries at a low cost.

This project is partially funded through a North Carolina Coastal Storm Damage grant we received to mitigate or remediate coastal storm damage to the state's ocean beaches and dunes systems.
