There is no change to our sanitation collection schedule (including curbside recycling) due to the 4th of July holiday and our brush/bulk trash collection yard will operate on its normal schedule as well.

All town administrative offices will be closed in honor of the holiday, however.

Have a safe holiday and remember to leave the fireworks to the professionals as all consumer fireworks are prohibited in Nags Head.

Dog Park Closed June 26-28

Due to the lovely weather we've had this past week, we were unable to conduct the surfacing upgrades to the entry areas at our dog park. Therefore, we're going to try it again, so the park will be closed Monday through Wednesday, June 26-28. Please tell your dogs we're sorry for the inconvenience.

A gravelpave system, with crushed granite, will be installed to create a dry, mess free surface as you enter and exit the park. Note that this will only affect the dog park area, not the recreational fields.

Nags Head adopts 2023-2024 budget.

At their June 21, 2023 meeting, Nags Head’s Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to adopt the Town’s Fiscal Year July 1, 2023 – June 30, 2024 budget.

A few highlights include:

  • A 4.25% cent tax increase, which will largely be used to pay the debt service for the new Public Services facility and the replacement of the town's aging water meters with digital meters.
  • No changes to the municipal service district or town-wide beach nourishment taxes.
  • Resurfacing of several sections of Town streets.
  • Replacement of asbestos cement water lines.
  • Replacement of the Loggerhead public access beach walkover ($75,000).

What to do if caught in a rip current.

Q: What should I do if I’m caught in a rip current?

A: The most important thing to note is that rip currents pull you out, not under.

  • Remain calm.
  • Yell and wave for help.
  • Stay afloat.
  • Swim parallel to the shore. Don’t try to swim against the current.

Once you no longer feel the pull of the current, then you can begin swimming to shore.

Nags Head Planner Chris Trembly stands next to address signs.

If you are in south Nags Head this week or in the following weeks, you may see Planner Chris Trembly installing address signs in the right of way about every 100 block to make it easier for public safety to find you, your family, your friends, or your visitors.

Later, he'll be doing the same, as time permits, in the north end of town.

Chris was one of our firefighters before he moved across the street to our Planning and Development Department, so he's big on safety and being able to find people in an emergency. It's always good to know the address of where you are, just in case you need it.

Get ready for our July 4th fireworks spectacular.

Fireworks Spectacular July 4

The Town of Nags Head will host, in conjunction with the Nags Head Fishing Pier and the Outer Banks Visitors Bureau, the annual Independence Day Fireworks Spectacular Tuesday, July 4, 2023 at 9:25 p.m. on Nags Head Pier, located at Mile Post 11.5 on NC Route 12, South Virginia Dare Trail in Nags Head. A rain date has been set for Wednesday, July 5. The fireworks display will last approximately 25 minutes.

Parking at and near the fireworks display site will be directed by the Nags Head Police Department. Those attending the show are encouraged to park east of U.S. Highway 158/South Croatan Highway. Those choosing to park west of U.S. Highway 158/South Croatan Highway should use extreme caution while attempting to cross this heavily traveled roadway.

All persons attending this event are reminded not to use or block private driveways. Vehicles blocking driveways or presenting a traffic hazard before, during, or immediately following this event will be towed.

The Town of Nags Head requests that persons use the public beach accesses as pathways to the oceanfront. Please stay off the environmentally sensitive dune and do not use the private property of others, such as private gazebos or decks, to view the fireworks without the property owner’s permission.

No vehicles, with the exception of authorized Town and emergency vehicles, will be allowed on the ocean front beaches.

The following public beach accesses are recommended for access to the beach for fireworks viewing:

South of Nags Head Fishing Pier

  • Curlew Street
  • Hollowell Street
  • Conch Street

North of Nags Head Fishing Pier

  • Bladen Street
  • Bittern Street
  • Bonnett Street
  • Blackman Street

At the conclusion of the fireworks, spectator, pedestrian, and vehicular traffic exiting the area will be directed and controlled by Nags Head police officers.

The Town of Nags Head wishes to express its gratitude to Andy and Lovie McCann and the entire staff of the Nags Head Fishing Pier for agreeing to co-host this event and to the Outer Banks Visitors Bureau for their generous grant.

Thank you for recycling right, Nags Head.

Sandals, pool floats, sunglasses...TFC Recycling has seen it all!

Many of these items are made of plastic, but they are not recyclable. Please do not place your poolside items in your curbside recycle bin. Thank you for recycling right this summer.

Thanks for recycling right!

If you don't have time to haul your recyclables to the recycling centers we have at town hall (5401 South Croatan Highway) and our public services facility (2200 Lark Avenue), subscribe to the curbside recycling collection service offered by TFC Recycling. The cost is only $10.33/month thanks to a $5/month subsidy from the Town.
