South Croatan Highway Paving Taking Place Winter/Spring 2023

The North Carolina Department of Transportation is conducting a paving project on South Croatan Highway in Nags Head during winter and spring 2023. Please keep this in mind when traveling the road and be sure to slow down to ensure everyone's safety.

Update
The drainage pipe replacement project in front of our town hall is nearly complete and both northbound lanes of South Croatan Highway are open again.

**Please keep in mind there are still single lane closures on South Croatan Highway in Nags Head. These will continue, and change, as the paving project, and some small curb and drainage projects, progress.

Be prepared to come upon construction on South Croatan Highway while traveling in Nags Head. There are also some small infrastructure projects taking place on South Virginia Dare Trail.

FYI-Historic Character Area Zoning Changes

On March 1, 2023, Nags Head's Board of Commissioners will hold a public hearing to consider revisions to the Town's Unified Development Ordinance and a Zoning Map amendment pertaining to the Historic Character Area and the October 19, 2023 moratorium. Property owners in the impacted areas should have received a letter earlier this week.

The Town is proposing to change the zoning classification for properties between US 158/South Croatan Highway and NC12/South Virginia Dare Trail from Hollowell Street south to Danube Street. This proposal also includes properties on the east side of Memorial Avenue from Bainbridge Street south to Hollowell Street. These zoning changes would create consistency with existing land uses and would be compatible with the current intensity of development in this area. The changes recommend that:

  • some properties in the C-2, General Commercial district be rezoned to R-3, High Density Residential
  • other properties be rezoned from C-2, General Commercial, to a new zoning district, C-5, Historic Character Commercial.

We love convenience, but single-use plastic waste can't be recycled.

We love convenience, but single-use plastic waste can't be recycled. Here's how you can help reduce that waste:

  • Refuse plastic utensils, chopsticks, napkins, and unnecessary condiments. You can add this request to the notes section of your order. It's likely you already have these at home.
  • Request paper bags if they are available. They can be reused to hold your recycling and the bag itself can be recycled many times! Plastic bags can not be recycled or used as recycle bin liners.
  • Reuse containers. Food containers can not be recycled due to contamination, but they can be reused for leftovers. They're also perfect paint palates for young recyclers! If you have other ideas, share them here!

If you don't have time to haul your recyclables to the recycling centers we have at town hall (5401 South Croatan Highway) and our public services facility (2200 Lark Avenue), subscribe to the curbside recycling collection service offered by TFC Recycling. The cost is only $9.60/month thanks to a $5/month subsidy from the Town.
