Photo of Hydrant Spewing Water to Advertise Annual Fire Hydrant Testing

Each year during the offseason, Nags Head Fire Rescue conducts critical fire hydrant testing to verify water flow that may be needed for fire protection. The testing is a requirement of the North Carolina Department of Insurance, Office of State Fire Marshal's Insurance Services Office (ISO) fire rating system.

All fire hydrants must be flow tested to determine the available water flow and pressures.

Testing takes place between 9 am and 5 pm.

Nags Head water customers in the hydrant testing area may experience the following temporary conditions after testing takes place: reduced water pressure and water discoloration.

Call Nags Head Fire Rescue at 252-441-5909 if you have any questions.

About the North Carolina Response Rating System
The North Carolina Response Rating System ranges from one (highest) to 10 (not recognized as a certified fire department by the state), with most rural departments falling into the 9S category. Nags Head property owners currently enjoy an ISO rating of 2. While lower ratings do not necessarily indicate poor service, a higher rating does suggest that a department is overall better equipped to respond to fires in its district. Higher ratings can also significantly lower homeowners insurance rates in that fire district.

Water System Flushing Taking Place Hands under running water The Town of Nags Head is conducting the annual maintenance flushing of its water system to remove sediment and other deposits that can build up over time.

The annual flushing of our water system is complete. Thank you for your patience as we conducted this important task.

Plastic consumption is an issue that has grown with increased online shopping and food delivery over the last couple of years. Today we're bringing attention to one of the most common single-use plastics: STYROFOAM Styrofoam is everywhere. Packing material, carryout containers, cups, coolers, and more. As convenient as it is, styrofoam is not recyclable in Virginia, is not biodegradable, and is very harmful to wildlife. ?Alternatives to styrofoam are: ?? Choosing paper when available. ?? Styrofoam is everywhere. Packing material, carryout containers, cups, coolers, and more. As convenient as it is, styrofoam is not recyclable in Virginia, is not biodegradable, and is very harmful to wildlife.

  • Alternatives to styrofoam are:
  • Choosing paper when available.
  • Bringing reusable options.
  • Dining in instead of taking out.

Help reduce the production of this harmful plastic by saying no to styrofoam.

Don't have time to haul your recyclables to the recycling centers we have at town hall and our public works facility? Subscribe to the curbside recycling collection service offered by TFC Recycling. The cost is only $9/month thanks to a $5/month subsidy from the Town.
