U-85 was the first U-boat to be sunk in the North American coast off Cape Hatteras on April 14, 1942, after the start of Operation Drumbeat (Paukenschlag) on January 13, 1942. U-85 was sunk by gunfire from the destroyer USS Roper. All hands (46) died. The wreck is located approximately 18 miles east of Nags Head. The depth is about 100 feet. This is an advanced dive as currents can be very strong in the area. The wreck is a German war grave and should be respected as such. Courtesy of uboat.net. Image courtesy of Jim Bunch.
