The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is currently conducting a paving project on South Croatan Highway in Nags Head. Please keep this in mind when traveling the road and be sure to slow down to ensure everyone's safety.
NCDOT will proceed with the S. Croatan Hwy resurfacing project in Nags Head beginning next week. The scope of work will include roadway milling and asphalt resurfacing in conjunction with several cross-highway culvert pipe replacements. The pipe replacements are scheduled near the intersections of W. Oak Knoll Dr./ S. Croatan Hwy, Baltic St./S. Croatan Hwy. and in front of Town Hall and Fire Station 16.
The milling and paving portion of the project is scheduled to begin on Monday, February 6, 2023, commencing near the intersection of E. Gray Eagle St./S. Croatan Hwy. and proceeding northward. This work is planned to occur in a phased approach. The first phase will span between Gray Eagle St. and Town Hall. The second phase will likely span from Town Hall to Jockey’s Ridge. The first two phases are expected to be completed by Mid-May 2023. The third phase is anticipated to occur this Fall to finish the balance of S. Croatan Hwy. up through to Eighth St.
The pipe replacement work will be conducted concurrently with the initial portion of the milling and paving work. The pipe work is scheduled to begin Monday, February 6, 2023, with the cutting of asphalt at each of the (3) replacement areas. Work will proceed to the W. Oak Knoll location for the pipe replacement and continue to Baltic St., with the Town Hall location being the last to be replaced. It is anticipated the W. Oak Knoll pipe replacement will be completed the week of February 6, 2023, and the Baltic St. location completed the week of February 13, 2023. Southbound traffic flow is expected to be maintained during the pipe replacement activities, with northbound traffic being routed to S. Virginia Dare Trail in advance of the two locations. For the W. Oak Knoll location, northbound traffic is expected to be diverted to the signalized intersection at Adams Lane. For the Baltic St. location, northbound traffic is anticipated to be diverted at the Barnes St. signalized intersection.
At times, the pipe replacement in front of Town Hall may require a full road closure with southbound and northbound traffic diverted to S. Virginia Dare Trail at Epstein St. and Seachase Dr., respectively. It is anticipated this work may occur the week of February 20, 2023.
Advance traffic messaging will be provided around the Whalebone Junction area and near Colington Rd. to alert motorists of the temporary change in traffic patterns. Other traffic control measures will be placed in advance of the active construction zones.
The project schedule is subject to change due to inclement weather or extenuating circumstances that can result in construction delays.
