The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has officially obligated $16,233,837.14 in funding to replace sand lost on the beach as a result of Hurricane Matthew in October 2016. During the project, which will take place in 2019 as part of Nags Head's regularly schedule beach maintenance work, 1,431,653 cubic yards of sand will be placed on the 10 miles of beach that makes up the nourishment project area from Bonnett Street south to the town line with the National Park Service.
