[ARCHIVED] Beach Restoration 2022 - Completed

Beach Restoration 2022

Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Co. pumped the last load of sand for Nags Head's 2022 beach restoration project at approximately 2:30 a.m. this morning, Saturday, August 27, 2022. The Dredge Liberty Island delivered the last load at the northern terminus of the project area near the Comfort Inn South at 8031 South Old Oregon Inlet Road.

Approximately 611,000 cubic yards of sand was placed over 4.45 miles of beach during approximately 19 days of construction.

The project kicked off with the arrival of the Dredge Ellis Island on July 22, 2022. Over approximately 11 days, the largest hopper dredge in the United States placed sand from 9331 South Old Oregon Inlet Road south to 10435 South Old Oregon Inlet Road. The Ellis Island completed the southernmost section of the project on August 1. After a short hiatus, the project resumed with the arrival of the Dredge Liberty Island on August 17, 2022. Over approximately 8 days, the Liberty Island restored the beach between 9331 South Old Oregon Inlet Road and 8031 South Old Oregon Inlet Road.

Over the next few days, Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Co. will remove their equipment from the beach. The Gulfstream public beach access will remain closed while the equipment is being removed.

Thank you to all who may have been impacted by this project, yet continued to support it. We appreciate your patience as we worked to protect our town.
