A construction progress map will be updated daily during the project to provide the latest beach closure information.
August 18, 2022 Schedule Update
Beach restoration construction temporarily paused about 9 pm on August 17, 2022, as the Dredge Liberty Island sustained some damage that required a trip to Norfolk, VA for inspection and repairs. The dredging contractor, Great Lakes Dredge and Dock, has not yet provided an estimate on when the Liberty Island may return to the project.
Prior to heading to Norfolk, the dredge was able to complete about four loads, placing about 15,000 cubic yards of sand, roughly, on the beach.
When construction resumes, it will take place just south of 8701 South Old Oregon Inlet Road. Over the next five to seven days, construction will progress south to near 9405 South Old Oregon Inlet Road. Then, over about seven more days, construction will return to near 8701 South Old Oregon Inlet Road and proceed north to 8031 South Old Oregon Inlet Road, which is the northern end of the beach restoration project area. Project construction should be completed by early September.
Restoration of the southernmost two miles of beach in Nags Head, from about 9405 South Old Oregon Inlet Road south through 10435 South Old Oregon Inlet Road, has been completed.
Beach Access and Lifeguard Stand Changes Due to Beach Restoration
*The Gulfstream public beach access will be used for equipment staging and will be closed to both pedestrian and vehicular traffic from about mid-August through early September 2022.
**The Juncos access will remain closed to vehicles until late August. Pedestrians will be allowed to use the access when the dredging contractor feels it is safe.
The lifeguard stand at this access has been temporarily relocated to the Jacob access.
