With the assistance of WithersRavenel, the Town of Nags Head has been developing conceptual drainage improvement plans for prioritized flood prone areas. The first three project areas are currently in the development phase for an early 2019 construction time frame. Note that the projects are still conceptual in design with locations of improvements subject to change.
The following project areas are to be included in this effort.
Project Area #1- Gallery Row
The proposed conceptual plan is to replace the existing dual storm pipes which cross S. Virginia Dare Trail, (see attached Project Area #1 concept plan for location). The planned work will include increasing pipe size and lowering the pipe invert elevations which will create additional storage in the upstream portion of the drainage network. The proposed improvements are expected to reduce roadway flooding in conjunction with reducing the time for floodwaters to recede.
Project Area #2- Nags Head Acres (southern section)/Vista Colony (eastern section)
The proposed improvements include the installation of a series of groundwater lowering pumps which will drawdown the groundwater in the subject area with conveyance to the existing Vista Colony (western section), groundwater lowering system, (see attached Project Area #2 concept plan for location). The proposed improvements are anticipated to reduce depth of roadway flooding, reduce occurrences of flood events in addition to reducing time for floodwaters to recede.
Project Area #3- Village @ Nags Head
The conceptual plan outlines the addition of a parallel storm drain pipe along the western extents of S. Virginia Dare Trail, beginning at the intersection of Mall Dr., (see attached Project Area #3 concept plan for location). Planned improvements have been modeled with results expected to improve downstream conveyance, increase infiltration capacity, reduced occurrences of flood events and reduced time for floodwaters to recede.
There are 10 remaining project areas currently in the Stormwater CIP listing. A composite map of the remaining project areas are provided in the exhibit titled Overall Map of Prioritized Drainage Projects. Several concept plans will be developed for each of the remaining project areas and introduced for Board of Commissioners consideration at the FY 2019 CIP workshop.
