[ARCHIVED] July 30, 2019 Beach Nourishment Update

More Beach to Love

Beach nourishment construction has passed Jennette's Pier and is progressing south near Mile Post 16.5 in the 8000 block of South Old Oregon Inlet Road.

We anticipate that sometime on Thursday, August 1, 2019 (keep in mind this date could change), construction will jump to the submerged pipeline located near Mile Post 18 in the 8500 block of South Old Oregon Inlet Road. From that submerged pipeline, construction will move south to tie into the beach that was built earlier in the summer near Mile Post 18.5 in the 8900 block of South Old Oregon Inlet Road.

In addition, we anticipate that pumping operations on the beach will stop temporarily on Friday evening, August 2, when the dredge heads to Norfolk for refueling. The dredge should return to the area on Sunday morning, August 4. You can track the Liberty Island's position at

As background, construction typically progresses 5,000 feet on each side (north and south) of a submerged line that connects to a dredge offshore. Once construction has been completed 5,000 feet in each direction, work will then move to another submerged line and the process will begin over again.

Several parking spaces at the Juncos Street public beach access are being used by the sand fencing/sprigging contractor, but the access remains open.

The Forrest Street public beach access near Mile Post 15.5 remains closed to parking, however pedestrians may still use the access.

The project is still expected to be complete in late August or early September.
