In 2009, Nags Head resident and artist Barry Lee became frustrated by the amount of litter on the beach. With cans positioned at all the public beach accesses in Nags Head, Barry wondered why some beachgoers still refused to use them. What could be done to bring attention to the cans and inspire beachgoers to use them? Perhaps, he thought, the cans did not stand out enough. Perhaps they needed to draw attention to themselves in some way. And so, out of this frustration, grew Barry’s idea for OBCan.
A community arts project, OBCan uses beautifully painted trash cans to encourage beachgoers to dispose of their trash responsibly.
