Outer Banks Shoreline Management - Nags Head Beach Nourishment 2019

Beach Nourishment Project Update

As mentioned in our email earlier this week, beach nourishment construction is progressing south from Mile Post 18 in the 8500 block of South Croatan Highway to tie into the beach completed earlier this summer just south of Outer Banks Pier near Mile Post 18.5 in the 8900 block of South Old Oregon Inlet Road.

Construction will cease temporarily on Friday night, August 2, while the Dredge Liberty Island sails to Norfolk for its last re-fueling (!). The dredge is expected to return to work on Sunday morning, August 4.

Once construction reaches the tie in near Mile Post 18.5, work will flip back to the submerged pipeline near Mile Post 18 and progress north to tie into the already completed beach near Mile Post 16.75 in the 8200 block of South Croatan Highway. Then, the project will be complete!

Progress Map

National Night Out 2019

National Night Out Tuesday, August 6, 2019

Join Nags Head’s Police Department on August 6, 2019 to promote community camaraderie and involvement in crime prevention activities as part of the annual National Night Out Against Crime initiative.

Held each year in August, National Night Out Against Crime heightens crime and drug prevention awareness; generates support for, and participation in, local anti-crime programs; strengthens neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and sends a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

The event, held in conjunction with the Nags Head Community Watch Association, will be held at the Ark International Church at 113 West Villa Dunes Drive near Mile Post 11.5, from 5 pm-7 pm.

Neighbors will have a chance to “meet and eat” with the public safety personnel charged with protecting the community. In addition, police officers, firefighters, and other public safety personnel will show off the tools they use to solve crimes, fight fires, and save lives.

A 6 pm, weather permitting, a C 130 aircraft, from U.S. Coast Guard Base Elizabeth City, will fly over the event.

In addition, Child ID kits will be available, as well as child safety seat inspections and the popular police K-9 demonstrations will take place.
Other participants in this great event are:

  • Nags Head Fire and Rescue
  • The Outer Banks Hospital
  • Jockey’s Ridge State Park
  • North Carolina Aquarium
  • North Carolina Works Outreach
  • Outer Banks Chamber of Commerce
  • Outer Banks Hotline
  • Outer Banks YMCA
  • North Carolina Highway Patrol
  • Additional activities and participants are planned!

Neighbors App Being Used to Assist Police

Nags Head Police Using Neighbors App for Crime Information

Residents can text ‘NHNC’ to 555888 from their smartphone to download the Neighbors app for free on iOS and Android and use the app to; join their neighborhood, share crime and safety-related videos, photos and text-based posts; and receive real-time safety alerts from their neighbors, local law enforcement and the Ring team.

“We are excited about our partnership with Ring,” said Police Chief Phil Webster. “The Neighbors app enables our department to be even more proactive in deterring and detecting crime. Our residents play a crucial role in this new partnership, adding more meaning to the concept of community-oriented policing. For example, we’ll post crime alerts and information and then request videos from those living or working in the impacted area. A video camera from Ring is not needed to participate. Residents just download the Neighbors app and, if they capture an incident or suspicious activity, they post it to the app and we will work together to keep this great community of ours safe.”

How It Works

  • Text ‘NHNC’ to 555888 or go to: https://shop.ring.com/pages/neighborsapp from your smartphone to download the app for free on iOS and Android.
  • Opt-in to join your neighborhood.
  • Customize the geographic area you want to receive notifications for (users must verify where they are located and cannot participate in other neighborhoods).
  • Receive real-time alerts from your neighbors, local law enforcement and the Ring team that inform of crime and safety alerts as they happen.
  • View local crime and safety posts via a live feed or interactive map.
  • Share text updates, photos and videos taken on any device, including Ring’s home security devices.

New Video Available Discussing Preliminary Flood Maps in Dare County

At the July Community Rating System meeting, local insurance and finance stakeholders were invited to discuss the preliminary flood maps and what the changes mean for local property owners.

Dare County, in partnership with Current TV, has released a video of a recent Outer Banks Community Rating System (CRS) Users Group Meeting about the preliminary flood maps released by FEMA that are expected to be adopted in 2020. At the July 2019 meeting, local insurance and finance stakeholders were invited to discuss the preliminary flood maps and what the changes mean for local property owners.

The video provides property owners with critical information about changes in the preliminary flood maps and what they should know before making changes to their flood insurance policies when the new maps are adopted.

On the preliminary flood maps, a number of properties in Dare County are being reclassified into shaded x zone and x zones. Although flood insurance is not required in shaded x zones and x zone properties, some of these properties being reclassified have historically and repeatedly flooded. In addition, the newly revised flood maps may not accurately reflect soundside flooding hazards or extreme rainfall.

Outer Banks CRS Users Group Meeting - A Conversation with Insurance and Finance Stakeholders is available for streaming on Dare County’s YouTube Channel at www.youtube.com/darecounty. The video will also broadcast on Current TV Government Channel 191 for local Spectrum TV customers.
