South Croatan Highway Paving Taking Place Winter/Spring 2023

The North Carolina Department of Transportation is conducting a paving project on South Croatan Highway in Nags Head during winter and spring 2023. Please keep this in mind when traveling the road and be sure to slow down to ensure everyone's safety.

The improvements include installing new pavement and replacing drainage pipes at West Oak Knoll Drive, Baltic Street, and in front of Nags Head's town hall.

Prior to paving, the highway's shoulders will be scraped ahead of milling and filling, which prepares the road for new pavement.

Shoulder scraping will take place first, progressing north from Whalebone Junction (the intersection of the highway with South Virginia Dare Trail and US 64). This work may take several weeks to complete. Outer lane closures are expected in the work zones.

At the beginning of February, work to replace the drainage pipes is expected to begin, proceeding from north to south. Traffic patterns for each of the work areas will be provided in advance of construction.

A start date for the mill and fill part of the project has not yet been finalized due to the work requiring warmer weather for the paving. Work is expected to begin around Gray Eagle Street and progress north.

We're looking for lifeguard housing for summer 2023.

As you know, housing is tough to come by here on the Outer Banks, particularly for seasonal employees. Yet, we still need to continue to provide our best-in-class ocean rescue services. If you have housing for our ocean rescue members, please contact Ocean Rescue Captain Chad Motz. Thank you.

Two Coast Guard rescue swimmers swept off boat during rescue.

Life on the Outer Banks means knowing that someone is usually in trouble when the folks from U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City fly over.

Check out this incredible story about two Coast Guard rescuers (one from our local CG - Elizabeth City base) working to save lives off Ocean City, MD. It's good to be reminded of what could happen to those called to rescue you (everyone is okay in this story, btw).

Many different metals can be recycled, but they're not accepted through curbside recycling. Heavy metal like this horseshoe must be taken to a scrap metal facility. The only metal accepted from your curbside bin is aluminum cans.

If you don't have time to haul your recyclables to the recycling centers we have at town hall (5401 South Croatan Highway) and our public services facility (2200 Lark Avenue), subscribe to the curbside recycling collection service offered by TFC Recycling. The cost is only $9.60/month thanks to a $5/month subsidy from the Town.
