CSI Science on the Sound Lecture Series

The Coastal Studies Institute in Wanchese has another interesting presentation scheduled next week as part of their Science on the Sound lecture series.

Associate professor and chair at ECU's Department of History, as well as a Southern Native American history expert, Dr. Chris Oakley will discuss, "Maritime Indians: The Coastal Algonquians of the Outer Banks," on Thursday, December. 8, 2022 at 6 PM.

Science on the Sound is a lecture series that highlights information on coastal topics and issues in northeast North Carolina. The series is held monthly September-May at the Coastal Studies Institute on the ECU Outer Banks Campus.

Each lecture is also live-streamed to the Institute's YouTube channel, where it is also recorded for later viewing. Past topics have included larval fish development, National Wildlife Refuges, beachcombing, coastal development, coastal landscaping and gardening, shipwrecks and maritime history, and climate impacts. All presentations are free, and the public is welcomed and encouraged to attend.

This facet of Dr. Oakley's research examines the maritime history, culture, and legacy of the Carolina Algonquians of eastern North Carolina. Employing a multidisciplinary approach by incorporating history, anthropology, archaeology, geography, and biology, this project will certainly have something for every interest!
