Dowdy Park entrance with closed sign. Park will be closed May 14, 2022 for maintenance.

Dowdy Park will be closed all day, Saturday, May 14, 2022 so we can treat the lawn.  The park will reopen early on Sunday, the 15th. We understand this is a really popular park; however, this work has to be done on a schedule. Thank you for understanding.

Aerial map of sidewalk improvements in Nags Head.

To improve pedestrian safety in our west side neighborhoods, we're starting work on sidewalk extensions in Nags Head Acres and Old Nags Head Cove. The work should take about three weeks, weather permitting.

Please ensure our sidewalk workers get home safely by driving slowly in these areas.

Photo of the old Casino in Nags Head care of a Facebook post from the Outer Banks History Center.

Who remembers Ras Wescott's Casino and the adjacent bingo hall? These buildings stood in Nags Head across the road from Jockey's Ridge (near the present-day site of Kitty Hawk Kites) and offered hours of entertainment to thousands of visitors and locals alike in the 40s, 50s, and 60s. They're shown here in these photographs by Aycock Brown taken in 1950.

For more vintage photos of the Outer Banks, check out the Aycock Brown Digital Collection at https://digital.ncdcr.gov/digital/custom/aycock-brown-photos.

This information and photo appeared in a post on the Outer Banks History Center's Facebook page.

Picture of Styrofoam boxes saying say no to Styrofoam.

Styrofoam is found everywhere. Packing material, carryout containers, cups, coolers and more. Though convenient, styrofoam is not recyclable in Nags Head, is not biodegradable, and is very harmful to wildlife.

Alternatives to styrofoam are:

  • Choosing paper when available.
  • Bringing reusable options.
  • Dining in instead of taking out.

If you don't have time to haul your recyclables to the recycling centers we have at town hall (5401 South Croatan Highway) and our public services facility (2200 Lark Avenue), subscribe to the curbside recycling collection service offered by TFC Recycling. The cost is only $9/month thanks to a $5/month subsidy from the Town.
