In 2021, Nags Head was chosen to participate in the NC Division of Coastal Management’s (DCM) Resilient Coastal Communities Program (RCCP). Building resilience positions the community, economy, and ecosystems to be able to rebound, positively adapt, and thrive amid changing conditions and challenges. This is necessary to preserve and protect the Nags Head character, environment, economy, and sense of place to ensure a high quality of life for residents and visitors for present and future generations.

The overall goal of this project is to involve the community in setting coastal resilience goals, assessing the existing conditions and needed capacity, and identifying and prioritizing projects that will enhance Nags Head’s resilience and response to coastal hazards. This process will eventually result in a Resilience Strategy for the town.

The survey is open through April 6, 2022.

We hope you will participate in this short survey to share your thoughts on how Nags Head can be more resilient. For more information, visit the Town’s website or contact Holly White at holly.white@nagsheadnc.gov.

Water System Flushing Taking Place

The Town of Nags Head is conducting the annual maintenance flushing of its water system to remove sediment and other deposits that can build up over time.

If not removed, these materials may cause water quality deterioration, taste and odor problems, or discoloration of the water. Water may also stagnate in lesser used parts of the distribution system. This can result in degraded water quality.

Read the Water Flushing FAQs.

What to Expect
Work typically takes place between 8:30 am and 4:00 pm.
When we are flushing the water lines in your area, you may observe any or all of the following conditions:

  • low water pressure
  • no water pressure
  • discolored water
In addition, you are advised to raise the lever on automatic ice makers and to check the water quality prior to washing clothes or running automatic dishwashers.

The schedule may change due to emergencies and other workload priorities.
If you have any questions, please call 252-441-1122.

Schedule
  • Monday, March 28, 2022 through Friday, April 1, 2022
    • The west side of South Croatan Highway from Gull Street north to Danube Street, including the Village at Nags Head

Cooking is the leading cause of home fire injuries. Learn how to treat a burn and, read the tips below to prevent cooking fires.

  • Be on alert! If you are sleepy or have consumed alcohol, don’t use the stove or stovetop.
  • Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, grilling, boiling, or broiling food.
  • If you are simmering, baking, or roasting food, check it regularly, remain in the kitchen while food is cooking, and use a timer to remind you that you are cooking.
  • Keep anything that can catch fire — oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels or curtains — away from your stovetop.
  • If you have a cooking fire
  • Just get out! When you leave, close the door behind you to help contain the fire.
  • Call 9-1-1 or the local emergency number after you leave.
  • If you try to fight the fire, be sure others are getting out and you have a clear way out.
  • Keep a lid nearby when you’re cooking to smother small grease fires. Smother the fire by sliding the lid over the pan and turn off the stovetop. Leave the pan covered until it is completely cooled.
  • For an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed.
