Town of Nags Head
A significant winter storm is forecasted to bring multiple hazards to our area Sunday and Monday, January 16 and 17, 2022.

Strong Winter Storm to Bring Impacts Sunday and Monday

A strong winter storm is forecast to bring strong winds, heavy rain, high surf, and possible soundside flooding Sunday and Monday.

  • For the latest weather forecast visit www.weather.gov/mhx.
  • Secure outdoor items so they do not become flying projectiles. Furniture, as well as trash and recycling carts, and items set out for curbside bulk/brush collection, should be secured before the winds increase on Sunday afternoon.
  • Prepare for ponding on our streets as a result of heavy rainfall. Be sure to drive cautiously.
  • The beach in Nags Head will be closed to driving on Sunday and Monday, January 16 and 17. We'll update our web site and our social media sites once the beach has been re-opened to driving.
  • There's no blue route trash collection on Monday, 1/17, but recycling collection will occur throughout town. To keep streets free from blowing carts during the winter storm, either wait until next Monday to place your cart out or place it out on Monday morning (1/17) instead of Sunday night.

Text on Chalkboard - Residential Stormwater and Fill Regulations Updated and Drafted

Updated residential stormwater and fill regulations have been drafted and will be presented to the Town's Planning Board at their January 18, 2022 meeting. Staff drafted the new ordinance language based on meetings with homebuilders, the Planning Board and the Board of Commissioners, as well as on the practical experience gained by applying stormwater regulations throughout residential areas in the town.

A public hearing is scheduled for the February 2, 2022 Board of Commissioners meeting. An agenda will be available on Friday, January 28, 2022.

You can watch a livestream of the January 18, 2022 Planning Board meeting starting at 9 am on the Town's YouTube site. The Board of Commissioners meeting will also be available via livestream at 9 am on February 2, 2022 on YouTube. Both videos will be available on YouTube after the meetings have taken place.

Water System Flushing Taking Place

The Town of Nags Head is conducting the annual maintenance flushing of its water system to remove sediment and other deposits that can build up over time.

If not removed, these materials may cause water quality deterioration, taste and odor problems, or discoloration of the water. Water may also stagnate in lesser used parts of the distribution system. This can result in degraded water quality.

Read the Water Flushing FAQs.

What to Expect
Work typically takes place between 8:30 am and 4:00 pm.
When we are flushing the water lines in your area, you may observe any or all of the following conditions:

  • low water pressure
  • no water pressure
  • discolored water
In addition, you are advised to raise the lever on automatic ice makers and to check the water quality prior to washing clothes or running automatic dishwashers.

The schedule may change due to emergencies and other workload priorities.
If you have any questions, please call 252-441-1122.

Schedule
  • Monday, January 18, 2022 through Friday, January 21, 2021
    • Water system flushing will take place from Gull Street south to the Oregon Inlet marina

Don't put your recyclables in a bag and then into your recycling cart.
