Summer 2022 Beach Restoration Project Moving Forward With Notice of Award to Great Lakes Dredge and DockAt their January 5, 2022 meeting, Nags Head's Board of Commissioners awarded an $11,598,653 contract for the summer 2022 beach restoration project to Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company, the largest provider of dredging services in the United States.
Headquartered in Houston, Texas, GLDD was the contractor on Nags Head's previous nourishment projects in 2011 and 2019.
Beach restoration will take place in south Nags Head this summer, with sand being placed on the oceanfront from 8031 South Old Oregon Inlet Road (Comfort Inn South) near Mile Post 16 south through 10435 South Old Oregon Inlet Road.
Schedule Great Lakes will likely provide a preliminary schedule in the spring of 2022. Because these complex projects are so weather-dependent, even when we are given a preliminary schedule, it may change. We will share the schedule as soon as possible via this email broadcast, social media, and our web site. Dare County's MoreBeachtoLove web site will provide information and links regarding all of the beach work that will take place this summer throughout Dare County.
These projects are not linear in nature, meaning Great Lakes won't necessarily start at the north end of the project area and proceed to the south end. We also may have more than one area of the beach closed at a time as there may be more than one dredge on the project. Visit our 2022 Hurricane Dorian Beach Restoration web site for more information on beach nourishment construction.

**We will provide beach closure updates on our web site daily throughout the project.

Aaron Burr's Daughter and Her Link to Nags HeadTheodosia Burr Alston, daughter of the third U.S. Vice President (and famous duelist) Aaron Burr, perished in a shipwreck somewhere off the east coast in 1813. We believe.
We know this: Theodosia set foot on the schooner Patriot out of Georgetown, South Carolina, on December 31, 1812 and was never seen again. Until her portrait appeared on the Outer Banks.
Dr. William Gaskins Pool, who is credited with building the first oceanfront house in Nags Head, attended a local woman, Mrs. Mann, and noticed a striking portrait of a young woman on her wall. Mann told him that her first husband had taken the portrait from a shipwreck decades earlier and then she gave it to Pool as a gift. The portrait was later determined to depict Theodosia Burr Alston. It was believed to have been painted by John Vanderlyn. The portrait was inherited by Dr. Pool's daughter, Anna Louise Pool (1858-1937), who married John Overman (1848-1919) in 1893. The couple had one child, Victor Kent Overman (1895-1970). Sometime prior to 1933, Anna Pool Overman sold the portrait to the McBeth Gallery in New York, and it was purchased by a descendant of the Burr family. The portrait was eventually donated by the family to the Lewis Walpole Library at Yale University.
Is the portrait really of Aaron Burr's daughter? Was she lost at sea during a storm or was she a victim of our area's famous "wreckers"?
Thank you to the Outer Banks History Center for most of the information above. They have a collection of the Pool family papers, though they are closed to the public through January 15, 2022, so you'll have to wait to solve this mystery. Good luck!
