Town of Nags Head
Volunteers need for Estuarine Shoreline Management Plan

Help Shape Nags Head's  Estuarine Shoreline Management Plan

The Town of Nags Head is looking for volunteers to serve on the Advisory Committee for the creation of the Estuarine Shoreline Management Plan. The purpose of this committee is to provide guidance and feedback to staff and the consultant on the development of an Estuarine Shoreline Management Plan. The principal purpose of the Plan is to develop strategies that will prioritize living shoreline management projects appropriate for each segment of the Town's shoreline. The Plan will further set overall policy recommendations appropriate for adjacent land uses, examine legal issues, and explore how sea-level rise will impact the long-term management of the estuarine shoreline.

As an Advisory Committee member, you will help to focus the work of Town staff and the consultant, identify and engage stakeholders, attend community meetings, provide feedback on the plan elements including overall goals, policies, and project prioritization, and have local knowledge of the estuarine system, and/or recreational usage of the sound. Team members will attend periodic meetings over a 12-month period dependent on the project schedule. All those that have applied will be considered for appointment by the Town’s Mayor and Commissioners at a future meeting of the Board.

All who wish to apply should email Holly White, holly.white@nagsheadnc.gov and Kate Jones, kate.jones@nagsheadnc.gov and provide answers to the following questions:

  1. Name
  2. Address (permanent and/or local property address)
  3. Occupation
  4. Educational Background
  5. Knowledge and/or experiences with the estuarine system and shoreline including but not limited to kayaking, fishing, kiteboarding, boating, or adjacent landowner.
  6. Your interest in the project and why you believe you would be an asset to the Advisory Committee and project (300 word max)

The deadline for submittal is on Wednesday, August 4, 2021 before 5:00 p.m.

In addition to the Advisory Committee, there will be other opportunities during the planning process for all interested stakeholders to be engaged and have input in development of the plan including but not limited to stakeholder interviews, a survey, and community meetings.  An overview of the scope for the Estuarine Shoreline Management Plan is available at the following link: LINK.

Please contact Holly White (holly.white@nagsheadnc.gov) or Kate Jones (kate.jones@nagsheadnc.gov) regarding any questions or concerns and share with anyone else who may also have an interest.

Nags Head Ocean Rescue Team Places Third Overall in Regional Lifesaving Competition

Members of Nags Head's Ocean Rescue team placed 3rd overall and 2nd in their division at the South Atlantic Lifesaving Association Regional competition held in Jacksonville Beach, Florida on July 14 and 15, 2021.

With 50 or more members this year, Nags Head competed in the big beach division for the first time, beating squads from Jacksonville Beach, FL, Virginia Beach, VA, Hilton Head, and Horry and Charleston Counties, SC. In the overall ranking, Nags Head placed behind only Wrightsville Beach and Atlantic Beach, NC.

The annual competition, which was last held in Nags Head in 2018 at Jennette's Pier, includes events such as the beach and paddleboard relays, the run-swim-run contest, and a surf race.

For $9/month, TFC Recycling will collect your home's recyclables. You can contact them at TFCRecycling.com.
Recycling one ton of plastic saves the equivalent of 1,000–2,000 gallons of gasoline. But the plastics have to make it to the recycling cart. Only about 23% of disposable water bottles are placed in recycling.
Be sure to recycle your plastic bottles (cap off). TFC Recycling provides a $9/month subscription-based curbside recycling service to Nags Head homeowners. *Note that TFC is requiring a two year contract for the service. You can drop off your recyclables 24/7/365 at either Nags Head's Town Hall or at our Public Works facility (2200 Lark Avenue).
