Update May 30, 2023
Nags Head Acres Subdivision: Paving work began earlier today along the length of S. Compass Lane. Once completed, paving operations will be discontinued due to the threat of rain. Weather permitting, paving work will continue with resurfacing of S. Pilot Lane and along Bridge Lane and followed by Adams Lane and Anchor Lane. Paving operations are anticipated to last through the remainder of the week.
Pipe crews have completed the last of the cross-street culvert pipe installations. General clean-up work is ongoing in the neighborhood. Striping to restore the ground-painted pavement marking is expected to begin on or around June 7th. Pavement striping will encompass all of the completed project areas including the recently paved portions of Old Nags Head Cove, E. Soundside Rd., Bainbridge St., S. Memorial Ave. between E. Bittern St. and the southern terminus, E. Bladen St., E. Barnes St. and E. Admiral St.
The project schedule is subject to change. Changes in location and dates of the proposed work will be communicated if/when additional information becomes available.

Update May 25, 2023
Nags Head Acres Subdivision: Pipe crews have installed cross-street culvert pipes at either end of Pilot and Compass Lane in addition to the end of Bridge Lane. Minor grading work is required to complete several of the pipe installations. The replacement of the cross-street culvert pipe near 2620 S. Bridge Lane is scheduled for today, May 25th. This work will require a temporary street closure. Traffic will be diverted through Compass and Pilot Lane for vehicular access to the west side of S. Bridge Lane. The final pipe installation is scheduled near the intersection of W. Adams Lane and S. Bridge Lane. This work is scheduled for Friday, May 26th, weather permitting. A temporary single-lane closure will accompany the work at this location.
Paving work is anticipated to commence on or around May 31st. It is anticipated paving will take approximately 3-4 days to complete.
General clean-up work within the various project areas is tentatively scheduled to occur on Friday, May 26th and again on Tuesday, May 30th. Striping to restore the ground-painted pavement marking is expected to begin on or around June 7th.
Update May 19, 2023
Nags Head Acres Subdivision: Pipe crews will proceed with the cross-street culvert pipe installations beginning the week of May 22nd, weather permitting, beginning in the western part of the neighborhood and working eastward. There are seven cross-street pipes total to be replaced and/or installed. Once completed, paving crews will mobilize and begin with pavement resurfacing of all streets within the neighborhood.
For the recently paved streets, some selective shoulder work and pavement striping remain. This work is anticipated to commence the first or second week of June.
Update May 16, 2023
Work has progressed to the Nags Head Acres Subdivision. Pipe crews are currently on-site and will be replacing and installing cross-street culvert pipes in the neighborhood. Work will begin at the intersection of W. Bridge Lane and S. Pilot Lane intersection, (near 2600 S. Pilot Lane). Work will proceed with the installation of a new cross-street culvert pipe at the northern intersection of W. Bridge Lane and S. Pilot Lane, (near 2501 S. Pilot Lane), and W. Bridge Lane and S. Compass Lane. The work will transition to the south side of the neighborhood with the replacement of pipes at the intersection of S. Pilot Lane and W. Bridge Lane, (near 2619 S. Pilot Lane), and the intersection of S. Compass Lane and W. Bridge Lane, (near 2621 S. Compass Lane). The pipe near the curve of S. Bridge Lane, (near 2620 S. Bridge Lane), will be replaced and finished with a new pipe installation near the intersection of W. Adams Lane and S. Bridge Lane. Generally, the work will proceed from west to east.
Each pipe installation is anticipated to take approximately (1) day to complete, absent of underground utility interferences and weather permitting for a total expected duration of a week and a half. Temporary road closures will be employed at each of the pipe installations with traffic diverted towards the opposing end of the street. For the Adams Lane pipe installation, a single-lane road closure shall be employed to permit residents access through to the western part of the neighborhood. Some minor concrete flat work is scheduled for the inside curve of S. Bridge Lane in the proximity of 2500 S. Bridge Lane.
Once the scope of work is completed, paving crews will commence with the roadway resurfacing. The paving portion is expected to last less than one week, weather permitting. Once the paving is complete, crews will complete some shoulder repair work in addition to striping restoration.
Update May 11, 2023
A temporary intersection closure is currently in place along E. Barnes St. limiting the east/west flow of traffic near the intersection of E. Barnes St./S. Memorial Ave. due to ongoing utility work. This temporary road closure will extend overnight and be lifted on Friday morning May 12th. Once lifted a separate temporary road closure will be employed at the E. Barnes St./S. Memorial Ave. in the north/south direction limiting the flow of traffic along S. Memorial Ave. It is anticipated another overnight road closure may be required and scheduled for removal on Saturday morning May 13th. Lighted barricades will be installed in advance of the active construction work area.
Update May 10, 2023
A temporary road closure is scheduled for E. Barnes St in the proximity of the S. Memorial Ave. intersection for Thursday May 11, 2023. It is anticipated the road closure will be in place between the hours of 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. This will be followed by a temporary road closure along S. Memorial Ave. in the proximity of E. Barnes St. intersection, and scheduled for Friday, May 12, 2023 between the hours of 8:00 am and 5:00 pm. The work will be comprised of replacing storm drain pipes at each of the street locations in advance of asphalt street resurfacing.
Update May 4, 2023
A temporary road closure is in place along E. Barnes St. in the proximity of S. Memorial Ave. to permit the installation of a new watermain. The road closure will be in place during the hours of 7:30 am to 5:00 pm on Thursday May 4th, Friday May 5th, and Monday 8th, weather permitting. The Bladen St. and Barnes St. beach parking areas have reopened. The resurfacing portion of the project has been completed along S. Memorial Ave. between Bittern St. and the S. Memorial Ave. cul-de-sac, E. Bladen St., Bainbridge St., E. Admiral St., E. Soundside Rd. and Pompano Ct. and W. Fin Lane. Work is expected to continue today at the southern end of S. Roanoke Way, continue to S. Blue Marlin Way, Albacore Dr., Amberjack Ct. and Sandpiper Ct. through the beginning of the week, weather permitting. The remainder of the resurfacing work will be sequenced from the west side of the neighborhood and advance towards the east. The anticipated resurfacing duration is approximately 7-10 days if the weather cooperates.
Update, May 1, 2023
Both the Bladen and Barnes public beach accesses are closed today due to the resurfacing project taking place in the area. We expect the accesses to re-open at some point tomorrow.
Update, April 27, 2023
Due to weather, the Bladen Street public beach access is not expected to close for area resurfacing work until Monday, May 1.
Update, April 26, 2023
The Bladen Street public beach access will be closed Thursday, April 27, 2023. The Fred Smith Company will be paving this area as part of the 2023 town street resurfacing project.
Background
A contractor for the Town, the Fred Smith Company, will begin the paving portion of the Town street resurfacing project the week of April 24, 2023.
Paving operations are scheduled to begin along S. Memorial Ave. between E. Bittern St. on the southern terminus. E. Bladen St. is included in this work along with Bainbridge St. Once completed, work will proceed to E. Admiral St. where the advance preparations were conducted several weeks ago. E. Soundside Rd. will be next in the sequence followed by Old Nags Head Cove subdivision. The streets scheduled for resurfacing in Old Nags Head Cove is as follows: W. Old Cove Rd., S. Cobia Way, W. Fin Lane, S. Pompano Ct., W. Sandpiper Terrace, S. Sandpiper Ct., S. Roanoke Way, S. Blue Marlin Way, S. Pamlico Way, Albacore Dr., W. Tarpon Ct., Amberjack Ct, and Dolphin Ct.
Nags Head Acres subdivision will follow Old Nags Head Cove subdivision and E. Barnes St. will round out the balance of the resurfacing work. Nags Head Acres and E. Barnes St. include drainage and water infrastructure improvements will be installed in advance of the paving work. This work is tentatively scheduled to begin in early May.
Property owner notifications have been mailed to the residents directly impacted by the project work.
