Fight for Nags Head's Future-Oppose Seismic Testing & Offshore Drilling

Save our Coast

According to a November 2016 Bureau of Ocean Energy Management report, an area 45 miles northeast of Cape Hatteras, known as the Manteo Prospect, is a promising site for oil and gas exploration, putting Dare County in the bull's eye for oil and gas drilling.

The first sale of oil and gas leases for the south Atlantic could go up for sale as early as 2020, with production beginning as early as approximately 2028. The time to let your feelings known on this subject is NOW.

What's at Risk

The beach and our pristine waters are our economic engines.

Dare County is home to a $1.2 billion tourism industry, which supports over 13,000 jobs and generates $102 million in tax revenues for our state. The commercial and recreational fishing industries support 22,500 jobs, resulting in $787 million in revenues.

Did you know that from 2001-2015, there were 700 offshore petroleum spills, which discharged nearly 5 million barrels of oil? Dare County has invested over $100 million in beach nourishment projects to ensure the future of its economy. Oil and gas drilling will destroy this investment.

Drilling off our coast is simply bad for North Carolina and its coastal economies.

Oil and Gas Drilling is a FOREVER Decision - Take Action Now

•    Write and call Senators Thom Tillis (202-228-2563) and Richard Burr (202-224-3154). Tell them your name and where you live and that you OPPOSE seismic airgun surveys and drilling in the Atlantic.

•    Write and call North Carolina Senator Bob Steinburg (919-715-8293) and ask him to actively oppose seismic airgun surveys and offshore drilling NOW.

Let's use this turning point in energy policy to move away from fossil fuels and accelerate development of clean, renewable energy that won't harm our economy, our property values, or our beautiful coast and its economies.
