The mayor and four board members make policy decisions in accord with procedures and responsibilities set out in North Carolina law. The town manager carries out policies and directives of the mayor and board of commissioners.
The mayor and board members are elected to four-year terms, which are staggered. Town elections for mayor and Board of Commissioners are non-partisan and at large (no wards/districts are designated) and are held in November of odd-numbered years.

The Commissioners appoint several boards and committees as well as various ad-hoc committees.
Agendas are available prior to the meetings. Minutes are available following approval.
