2022 Hurricane Dorian Beach Restoration Project

A beach restoration project in the summer of 2022 will replace sand lost during 2019's Hurricane Dorian. The project will place 567,000 cubic yards of sand on 4.45 miles of Nags Head's beach in the southern part of the town, from 8031 South Old Oregon Inlet Road (Comfort Inn South) near Mile Post 16, south to 10435 South Old Oregon Inlet Road (see map below).

The project is engineered to provide enough healthy, protective beach to allow the Town to align its regularly scheduled beach nourishment maintenance with those of the other northern beaches, tentatively planned for 2027. 

The dredging contractor will likely provide a preliminary schedule for the work in the spring of 2022. These projects are complex, with a lot of variables that may impact the construction schedule. 

A construction schedule map will be posted on this site in the spring of 2022. This map will be updated daily during the project to provide the latest beach closure information.

2022 Hurricane Dorian Beach Restoration Project Financing

The estimated $13,952,137 restoration project cost will be funded by a FEMA/North Carolina disaster assistance grant of $12,063,269, a North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality, Division of Water Resources Coastal Storm Damage Mitigation grant of $1,408,247, and a contribution of approximately $480,480 from the Town of Nags Head’s beach nourishment capital reserve.
